“The number of people who have been forced to flee their homes by conflict and crisis has climbed to 50 million for the first time since WWII” the United Nations has reported. That’s equal to the population of Spain.
How to build a new country and populate it with them is something we brainstormed with my friend West in Vienna few weeks ago.
Constructed from sand dredged from the bottom of the sea. The sand is sprayed from dredging ships, guided by a GPS, onto the required area. Breakwaters are built to the outer edges, structures to protect an anchorage from the effects of both weather and longshore drift. That is something what maritime engineering can help designing.
Beyond Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
Is it allowed to build a new country beyond the EEZ? Just a theoretical question, practically the bottom of the sea is probably too deep
Piles On Sinking Islands
It’s obviously tricky to make an artificial island on deep seas, just too much to be filled. What happens with a country when it sinks, for example Maldives? Will it still be a country or there is a law that says when a country is totally under water at least X meters then it’s no longer a country but a sea bottom.
